about

This project has been brewing for some time. It encompasses a wide range of my musical interests, but all revolves around the musical possibilities I’ve explored with the seven-string classical guitar, or violāo de sete cordas, as it’s called in Portuguese.

When I returned from an extended trip to Brazil in 2007 and started a band with flute player Paul Lieberman (featured on track 3), he dubbed me Jota Sete (zho-tah seh-chee), which means “J Seven” in Portuguese and is reminiscent of the nicknames given to Brazilian choro musicians. I dug it and it’s become my 7-string slinging alter-ego.

Though a lot of this recording has quite a Brazilian influence, I’ve tried to be true to my my own sound and to play in a manner specific to my own life and identity. Of the eleven tunes, four are original compositions (written between 1999 and 2014), two are straight-ahead swinging jazz standards, four are compositions by a few of my favorite Brazilian composers, and one is, well… Ralph Towner. I’ve put my own arranging stamp on all of the covers and the musicians who contributed to this recording all brought their unique voices to the mix.

I hope you enjoy this offering and are inspired to come to hear the band perform live!
