I got to know this tune by the great bebop pianist/composer, Tadd Dameron, in 2012, while helping my friend and mentor, Gene Bertoncini, prepare a book of his solo arrangements of jazz standards. I’ve incorporated elements of Gene’s arrangement into my version. I originally featured triplets in groups of 4, a common West African device that creates a “3 over 4” poly-meter. Conor Meehan suggested a close cousin of that poly-metric idea, alternating groups of 5 and 4 to imply a heavily-swung 3/4 meter.
